Happy National Radio Day! What an honor it is to have my episode on this historic day. August 20, 1920, marks the beginning of commercial radio stations here in the U.S. Station 8MK (WWJ)in Detroit, Michigan, is where it all began. The 1920s were when broadcast stations became the essential tool for disseminating news, fireside chats, and, of course, to share music. In honor of that, this episode is solely music that was playing on air at this time. I love a lot of 1930s music, but tried to keep it mainly to the 1920s to place my listeners in the heart of where radio began. My intention also is to remind us that all of our favorite music we enjoy on KPBJ.fm began with the music you will hear today on Kaleidoscope. Whether you love techno, rap, neo-soul, or punk, less than 100 years ago we had the crisp and sometimes strange music of the jazz age that paved the way for everything that came after it.
